Number a document the way a book is numbered. Header or footer, left, centre or right, any font size, and a start value so a chapter can begin at 41 instead of 1. Format options include plain numerals, 01-style zero padding, and roman numerals for a front matter. A cover page can be excluded while the numbering carries on through the body. Nothing is uploaded, no watermark is added, and the numbers are written into the page content so they print everywhere.
To add page numbers to a PDF free, choose header or footer, pick the alignment, font size and starting number, exclude any pages you do not want numbered, and download. The numbers are written into the page, not just displayed.
Number the cover and title page with roman numerals, then run the body with a separate pass starting at 1. Two passes with two page ranges is the standard approach and it costs about twenty seconds, which is cheaper than defending a document whose body starts at page 4.
A page number is a reading aid and can start at anything. A Bates number is an identifier: unique, sequential across the entire production, usually zero-padded and prefixed, so that any page can be cited unambiguously in a dispute. If you need a number that survives being quoted, use Bates Numbering rather than this tool.
They are almost certainly inside the printer's unprintable margin, or the print dialog scaled the page. Move the number further from the edge — 12 mm is a safe floor for office printers — and print at 100% scale.
If a reviewer needs to reference a section precisely, number the whole document rather than the section, then extract the section. Numbers that restart inside an extracted file conflict with the original when the two are compared, which is exactly the confusion a citation is supposed to remove.
Yes. Set the starting value to anything, so a chapter extracted from a larger document can continue from 41, or a standalone appendix can start at A-1. The number shown on each page is the start value plus its offset, not the physical page index.
Exclude it from the page range. The remaining pages are still numbered consecutively from the starting value, so excluding page 1 does not leave page 2 numbered 2 — unless you want that, in which case keep the default behaviour of numbering by physical position.
At least 12 mm from any edge, and a little more if the document will be bound on that side. Printers cannot print to the edge, so a number at 5 mm may be missing from the printout even though it is in the file.
They are drawn on top, positioned where you put them. If the document already has a footer, place the number clear of it or the two will overlap — there is no automatic collision detection because the tool cannot know what is in the footer.
Yes. They are page content, so they behave like any other text: they can be edited, and they are removed only if you deliberately delete them. If you want them truly permanent, flatten the document afterwards.
Yes — i, ii, iii or I, II, III, applied to a page range. The usual pattern is roman for the front matter and arabic restarting at 1 for the body, which takes two passes with different start values.
It adds numbers, it does not remove the old ones. If the document was printed with page numbers in the text layer, you will end up with two sets. Redact the old ones first, or use a document that never had them.
Yes. Free, no account, no watermark and no upload — the whole job runs locally, so numbering a contract offline is fine.
