Splitting at ranges names each file after its own first page, so 1-3 becomes pages 1-3 and 5 becomes page 5. Splitting every page gives page-001, page-002 and so on. Nothing gets called output_1 because of the order the files happened to be created in.
By range is for structure — chapters, sections, an appendix. By size is for transport — a file that has to pass through a mail server or an upload form. If your goal is the second, use Split PDF by Size and it will measure each part after cutting rather than guessing.
Find the appendix start page, then extract from there to the end. Because the extract mode keeps your listed order, you can also pull the two pages you actually need out of a 600-page specification in a single operation.
If you merged five files earlier and now want four of them back, the boundaries are the page counts of the originals. Split at those counts and the pieces line up with what you merged — provided nobody has since edited a page.
With commas between groups and a hyphen inside one: 1-3, 5, 7-10 means pages 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Spaces are ignored. A range that starts past the last page is reported as an error rather than silently returning nothing.
Yes. Each output is a genuine PDF built from the original page objects, so the text layer, fonts and links survive. Nothing is rasterised, which is the usual failure mode of screenshot-based splitters.
Bookmarks that pointed inside a kept range are kept and re-pointed; bookmarks that pointed at a removed page are dropped. Form fields are carried across when their page is included, and are the reason a split form is still fillable.
Yes. Splitting does not care whether there is a text layer — it copies page objects either way. The result is still image-only, so run OCR on the pieces if you need them searchable.
No artificial limit. Output files are small because each one holds a fraction of the input, but a 900-page split can produce 900 files, so the practical limit is how many files your download folder is willing to hold. Ask for a ZIP and it is one file.
